Florida Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Angie Nixon and U.S. Rep. Jamie Raskin met with residents in Lauderhill on Sunday, October 4, for a town hall .
Nixon is campaigning across Florida ahead of the November 3 midterm election, where she will face Republican Sen. Ashley Moody for a U.S. Senate seat. Nixon won the Democratic nomination in August, setting up a general election contest against Moody, who was appointed to the Senate in 2025.
The Lauderhill town hall came just days after Vice President JD Vance attacked Nixon during a Republican rally in Lakeland on October 1. Vance referred to Nixon as a “self-described socialist” and told the crowd, “Then get the hell out of here. You don’t belong in America.”
Nixon responded that same day, saying that Florida was her home and pushing back against the suggestion that her political views made her un-American. She pointed to her family’s history and said her ancestors helped build the country. She also argued that issues such as lower property insurance costs and access to health care for working families were not un-American, but basic concerns for Floridians.
The comments added another layer to Nixon’s campaign as she appeared in Lauderhill with Raskin. The town hall brought together residents, community organizers and supporters for an afternoon of discussion and questions. Raskin, a Maryland Democrat and longtime congressional representative, joined Nixon as the two spoke with attendees about healthcare, affordability and other issues shaping the political landscape heading into the November election
