VOICES BEYOND THE WALLS
Justice for Immigrants
By Jose Mejia
July 5, 2025 — A powerful chorus of voices gathered on Saturday to break through walls of silence and demand justice for immigrants who never made it home from detention. Under the banner of VOICES BEYOND THE WALLS, community members, activists, families, and allies came together to remember those who had died while in the custody of ICE — lives too often reduced to case numbers and hidden behind layers of steel fences and bureaucracy.
Speakers shared heartbreaking stories of loved ones lost, recounting how neglect, abuse, and medical inattention inside detention centers had claimed many lives. .
The demonstration served not only as a space of mourning but also as a moment of fierce resistance. Attendees demanded an end to the inhumane conditions that turned detention into a death sentence for many. They called for transparency, accountability, and a shift away from the cruelty of immigrant detention
while chants rose through the afternoon heat: “Not one more!” and “Abolish ICE!” The protest served as a powerful reminder that behind every death lay a story worth telling, a family left grieving, and a community determined to honor their memory by fighting for change.
VOICES BEYOND THE WALLS sent a clear message: these stories would not stay buried, and the movement for immigrant justice was far from finished.
