Week 30 of the Interfaith Vigil at “Alligator Alcatraz.”
By Jose Mejia
Family members and faith leaders once again gathered at the gates of the detention site, standing in prayer and solidarity as they demanded accountability for the inhumane treatment of detainees. What began as a call for transparency has grown into a sustained moral witness — week after week, refusing to look away.
Among those present was Karmen Ramírez Boscán, a Colombian Wayuu activist and member of the Cámara de Representantes, elected in to represent Colombians living abroad. She shared that she has been actively assisting Colombians in returning home after spending time in detention, helping families navigate the process of reunification and repatriation.
She also spoke about the inhumane conditions detainees have had to endure — emphasizing the emotional, physical, and psychological toll on those held inside. Her message was clear: dignity and human rights do not stop at a detention gate.
Week 30 stands as another reminder that the calls for accountability, transparency, and humanity are not fading — they are growing louder.
